Practice Yoga’s Roots: Yoga for Unity on and off the Mat

Yoga is often seen as a practice for the body—strengthening muscles, improving flexibility, and achieving balance. All of this is true. And at its core, yoga is far more profound. Rooted in the Sanskrit word “yuj,” meaning “to yoke” or “to unite,” yoga is fundamentally about unity—uniting mind, body, and spirit, as well as creating a deeper connection with others and the world around us. This practice literally helps us transform the world.

By embracing yoga’s roots, we can understand yoga as a powerful tool for cultivating harmony in our lives.

1. Yoga as a Practice of Unity

The idea of unity in yoga goes beyond individual well-being. Traditionally, yoga is a practice that encourages us to dissolve boundaries between ourselves and the world. “Tat tvam asi” is a Vedic saying that means “you are that” speaking of how each of us is connected to everything.  Whether it’s through asana (postures), pranayama (breathing exercises), or meditation, each element of yoga helps align our internal experiences with the external world. This holistic approach promotes a sense of oneness that reminds us we are all part of something greater.

2. Connecting Mind, Body, and Spirit

Yoga teaches us that to be truly healthy, we need to nourish all aspects of ourselves. By integrating physical postures with mindful breathing and meditation, yoga helps us bring unity to our mind, body, and spirit. Each breath, movement, and moment of stillness is an opportunity to connect more deeply with ourselves, cultivating inner peace and resilience that we can carry beyond the mat.

3. Fostering Unity with Others

Practicing yoga in community brings a unique energy that deepens our sense of connection. Sharing space, movement, and intention with others reminds us that we are not alone on our journey. Yoga encourages us to move beyond our individual experiences and to recognize the shared humanity that binds us all together. This unity cultivates compassion, understanding, and a sense of belonging that is rare in today’s world and so needed in times of loneliness and depression.

4. Unity in Diversity

While yoga comes from ancient roots, it has started from and evolved into many different forms, each with its own unique focus and style. Embracing our diversity is another way to honor the concept of unity. Regardless of the person practicing, style or tradition, every path and person in yoga offers something valuable, contributing to the vast tapestry of practices that help individuals connect to themselves and each other. In this way, yoga reminds us of unity within diversity.

5. Living Unity Beyond the Mat

The true essence of yoga is not just what happens on the mat but how we live our lives. Practicing yoga’s principles, like ahimsa (non-violence) and satya (truthfulness), helps us approach our daily interactions with more awareness, kindness, and compassion. By bringing these values into our lives, we can cultivate unity within ourselves and extend it to our communities and beyond.
